Please read with an open mind. Thanks.
I have been intending to write about this topic for a while, but have not, because the information abounds on this topic, and there is so much to say about it. In many cultures around the world, including ours, and including most mammals, mothers eat the placenta after the baby is born. One theory is that it originated because of a mother's intense hunger for meat after giving birth. You can read more ideas about the theory behind this on the Placenta Benefits website at http://placentabenefits.info/biological.asp.
Many scientific studies have shown that eating the placenta can have benefits of increasing a mother's milk supply, normalizing her hormones, relieving discomfort, and even helping to alleviate postpartum blues.
There are recipes to simply cook up the placenta in a dish that can be eaten after the baby is born. However, some find it more appealing to take their placenta in an encapsulated form, in which the placenta is specially prepared by drying it and then grinding it down into a fine powder, and consuming it throughout the postpartum period. Some mothers save some of these pills for later on during the menopausal stage to help normalize their hormonal levels.
If you are interested in having your placenta encapsulated, there are a number of doulas and other birth professionals on childbirthcollective.org who specialize in this service. This is something you can set up with them ahead of time, and they will arrange to pick up the placenta from you shortly after you give birth.
